The Many Sketches of John Leech
July 30, 2007
From 1841 to his death in 1864, John Leech’s cartoons in Punch Magazine were a major feature. The archives contain over 600 of Leech’s sketches and more are still being added (the creators of the site have 2000 in total). I’ve always enjoyed editorial cartoons from different ages in history and these are a great example. Where else would you find an editorial that states that a good way to get away from a nagging wife is to inhale ether? And where else would you see the almost alien outfits worn in a cricket game?

Yes … thought you might like to know that today (17 July) is the date that Punch was first published back in 1841.
